"The Almost-Men" by Irving E. Cox Jr. is a mid-20th-century science fiction story set in a post-apocalyptic world where humans are controlled by the technologically advanced Almost-men, exploring ideas of strength, who we are, and how humans can change. Brothers Lanny and Gill struggle to survive in this world and face tough choices as they resist the invaders. Journeying with their father, Juan Pendillo, and Tak Laleen, a surprising helper from the enemy side, they travel dangerous lands and fight not only external dangers but also their own feelings of hopelessness caused by past defeats in past conflicts; however, Lanny discovers the hidden potential and power of the human mind, which can reveal the power of belief to overcome the invaders. The story ends with the insight that real freedom comes from within, changing what it means to be human.
