"The Pioneer" by Irving E. Cox, Jr. is a mid-20th century science fiction story about Captain Victor Greg, who was once a celebrated astronaut, comes back to Earth after a long time away, only to discover that it's a barren place controlled by a new generation of kids with amazing abilities. The story looks at feelings of missing the past, fights between different age groups, and what progress really means for society. When Captain Greg lands on Earth, he feels lost and annoyed because the pioneering spirit he knew is gone, replaced by a society where kids can read minds and control things around them. He's angry at these children because he thinks they've taken over the legacy he worked so hard to create. Determined to get back his sense of purpose and power, Greg plans to use a military satellite to wipe out this new society. But when he faces these kids, he learns that their powers come from the Redearth he unknowingly brought back from Mars, which has changed their minds and how they see the world. The story makes people think about what progress and the future of humanity really mean, raising questions about being responsible, leaving a legacy, and what it means to be human when the world keeps changing.
