"Oberheim (Voices): A Chronicle of War" by Christopher Leadem is a science fiction story set far in the future, in the year 2410, where war and staying alive are the most important things. At first, we meet Elonna and her husband, Eric, as they try to survive in a dangerous alien world during wartime, showing us the ideas of loss, survival, and fighting back. The story kicks off with a scary attack from the sky that hurts Eric, and Elonna has to run away to save herself. She is forced to react to the loss, and desperately searches for a safe place where she eventually meets a mysterious man hidden in the landscape named Lawrence. As they struggle to survive together, they talk about the harsh truths of their world, showing us deep human feelings in the middle of all the danger. This part creates the atmosphere for a larger look at war, who we are, and the tough choices people face when things are really bad.
