"When the Sleepers Woke" by Arthur Leo Zagat is a science fiction story that plunges into a world destroyed by war, where very few people remain. It grapples with ideas of staying alive, how societies can fall apart, and the chance to start over after everything has been ruined.. The book follows Allan Dane, who wakes up after being frozen for a long time in a safe place, protected from a poison gas that covered the earth during a huge battle. When he wakes up, he realizes that he is one of only seven people still alive, living far away from the destruction of human conflict. As Allan finds out what happened to the others, he meets Naomi, who also made it through the chaos. Together, they face the dangers of this new world, which is filled with the crazy remnants of humanity driven mad by loneliness. The story ends with Allan racing against the clock to fight the evil remnants of the enemy and save his new community.
