"The Awakening" by Jack Sharkey is a science fiction story set sometime after a destructive war, telling the story of Rik and a group of people as they wake up in a hidden underground shelter. Their planned short sleep has turned into a much longer one because the machines keeping them alive failed. When they wake up, the wise elders who were supposed to help them are gone. Rik and the others must figure out how to survive in a world that has been changed drastically by the war. Emerging from their vault, they discover that the world is a mix of destruction and new beginnings, and they must learn to live in this new reality, facing tough situations while discovering the thrill of a completely new world.
