Summary

"Alone in London" by Hesba Stretton tells the tale of James Oliver, an elderly news agent whose quiet life is disrupted by the arrival of a young girl named Dolly, who is left in his care. The story explores the blossoming relationship between Oliver and Dolly as he offers her comfort in his shop. Their bond is challenged by the hardships of city life, including the introduction of a young boy named Tony, who seeks to care for Dolly. Themes of loneliness, compassion, and the surprising connections that emerge in difficult times drive the narrative forward.

About the Author

Hesba Stretton was the pseudonym of Sarah Smith, an evangelical English author of religious books for children. These were highly popular. By the late 19th century Jessica's First Prayer had sold a million and a half copies – ten times more than Alice in Wonderland. She concocted "Hesba Stretton" from the initials of herself and four surviving siblings, along with the name of a Shropshire village she visited, All Stretton, where her sister Anne owned a house, Caradoc Lodge.
