"Girl Alone" by Anne Austin is a story that follows sixteen-year-old Sally Ford as she leaves the orphanage where she grew up and tries to make a life for herself. It shows the challenges she has as an orphan. Sally and the other girls clean the orphanage floors, and Sally entertains the younger kids by pretending to be a character. Then a farmer named Mr. Carson takes her from the orphanage for the summer. As she prepares to leave, you see Sally's tough spirit mixed with wanting to belong and how she copes with facing the outside world on her own.
