Summary

"Alone" by Marion Harland is a story from the 1800's that follows Ida Ross as she deals with sadness, love, and being lonely after her mother passes away. The story starts with Ida at her mother's funeral, showing how close they were and how much Ida is hurting. After losing her mother, Ida goes to live with a guardian, creating a cold and lonely atmosphere. Harland uses descriptive writing so the reader can vividly understand Ida's feelings and her longing for connection, while she tries navigating through life and the challenges it throws her. The relationships between Ida and others, like her uncaring guardian and new people she meets, suggest that more will be revealed about who Ida is and what she must overcome.
