Summary

** "The Doctor's Dilemma" by Hesba Stretton is a tale of courageous exploration, focusing on a young woman entangled in London, wrestling with invisible chains threatening to crush her spirit. Driven by unyielding determination, she engineers a daring escape, plunging into a journey marked by resilience and a quest for solace. Initially tormented and bordering on despair, she seizes an opportunity amidst a tempest, fleeing into the rainy London streets, where fate introduces her to Captain Tardif. Seeking refuge, she joins him on a voyage to the Channel Islands, a decision fueled by both fear and anticipation as she abandons her former existence in pursuit of a sanctuary to reconstruct her life. The beginning intensely portrays the protagonist's intense emotional battle and nascent strides toward liberation, creating a sense of immediacy that catapults the narrative forward. **

About the Author

Hesba Stretton was the pseudonym of Sarah Smith, an evangelical English author of religious books for children. These were highly popular. By the late 19th century Jessica's First Prayer had sold a million and a half copies – ten times more than Alice in Wonderland. She concocted "Hesba Stretton" from the initials of herself and four surviving siblings, along with the name of a Shropshire village she visited, All Stretton, where her sister Anne owned a house, Caradoc Lodge.
