Summary

"The Doctor's Dilemma" by Bernard Shaw is a drama that explores the challenging choices faced by doctors, especially Sir Colenso Ridgeon, who has recently been knighted. His new treatments for tuberculosis force him to think deeply about morality and how much a human life is worth. The play starts in a doctor’s office with Redpenny, a young medical student, and Emmy, an old servant. They talk about Ridgeon’s knighthood and the impact of his medical discoveries. As Ridgeon works alongside other doctors, he struggles with what it means to be a healer and the difficult choices he must make about which patients to treat. When Mrs. Dubedat asks for his help to save her artistic husband from tuberculosis, Ridgeon must decide who deserves life-saving treatment, making the moral questions even more personal and complex.

About the Author

George Bernard Shaw, known at his insistence as Bernard Shaw, was an Irish playwright, critic, polemicist and political activist. His influence on Western theatre, culture and politics extended from the 1880s to his death and beyond. He wrote more than sixty plays, including major works such as Man and Superman (1902), Pygmalion (1913) and Saint Joan (1923). With a range incorporating both contemporary satire and historical allegory, Shaw became the leading dramatist of his generation, and in 1925 was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
