Summary

"Fern's Hollow" by Hesba Stretton immerses readers in the trials of Stephen Fern, a young boy burdened with responsibility in the face of hardship. Set against the unforgiving backdrop of Fern's Hollow, Stephen's journey begins with his father's illness, unveiling a family history marred by a grandfather's past and a cruel landowner's oppression. As he faces his father's death, the weight of his family's survival propels Stephen into a world where he must protect his younger sister, navigate moral quandaries, and strive to overcome the forces threatening to keep them in poverty. Marked by heartache and moral tests, the narrative weaves a tale of family, resilience, and the dream of a better life in the face of adversity.

About the Author

Hesba Stretton was the pseudonym of Sarah Smith, an evangelical English author of religious books for children. These were highly popular. By the late 19th century Jessica's First Prayer had sold a million and a half copies – ten times more than Alice in Wonderland. She concocted "Hesba Stretton" from the initials of herself and four surviving siblings, along with the name of a Shropshire village she visited, All Stretton, where her sister Anne owned a house, Caradoc Lodge.
