Summary

"Little Meg's Children" by Hesba Stretton is a moving story set in London's poor East End, about a young girl named Meg, who becomes the caretaker for her younger siblings after their mother dies. Meg bravely deals with poverty while holding onto hope that her missing father will return, all while also guarding a hidden stash of gold coins for her father's friend. The story begins with the emotional scene of Meg caring for her dying mother, and soon after, Meg has to raise her brother and sister, which shows her dedication to her family, and their struggle to maintain dignity. Through exploring these family dynamics, the text paints a picture of the lower class's struggles and the innocence of children growing up amid poverty and loss.

About the Author

Hesba Stretton was the pseudonym of Sarah Smith, an evangelical English author of religious books for children. These were highly popular. By the late 19th century Jessica's First Prayer had sold a million and a half copies – ten times more than Alice in Wonderland. She concocted "Hesba Stretton" from the initials of herself and four surviving siblings, along with the name of a Shropshire village she visited, All Stretton, where her sister Anne owned a house, Caradoc Lodge.
