Summary

"The Girl and Her Fortune" by L. T. Meade is a story about two orphaned sisters, Brenda and Florence Heathcote, as they step out of school and into the world as independent young women searching for their place in the world. With the help of their lawyer, Mr. Timmins, they must learn to navigate unexpected challenges while facing questions about their future. While Brenda is known for being smart and thoughtful, Florence’s beauty attracts attention from people like Lieutenant Michael Reid, and they return to the home of Mrs. Fortescue. The sisters soon realize that the world isn’t always friendly as they face the difficulties of adulthood, and find that they are more dependent on Mr. Timmins than they realized as they start to face serious problems. As they face uncertainty about their financial well-being, they must face reality and make important decisions for their future to make their way in a society that presents both opportunities and expectations for young women like them.
