Summary

"The Vanity Girl" by Compton Mackenzie is a story set in the early 1900s that follows Norah Caffyn, an ambitious young woman struggling against the confines of her traditional family life. She lives in West Kensington with her many siblings and controlling father, who lives in a dull neighborhood, where she dreams of escaping the expectations placed upon her. Norah longs for a life beyond her family and their expectations. She clashes with her father while trying to fulfill her aspirations and wanting to pursue a career on stage. Norah decides to abandon her engagement to Wilfred Curlew, her suitor, to pursue her dreams.

About the Author

Sir Edward Montague Compton Mackenzie, was a Scottish writer of fiction, biography, histories and a memoir, as well as a cultural commentator, raconteur and lifelong Scottish nationalist. He was one of the co-founders in 1928 of the National Party of Scotland along with Hugh MacDiarmid, R. B. Cunninghame Graham and John MacCormick. He was knighted in the 1952 Birthday Honours List.
