Summary

"A Romantic Young Lady" by Robert Grant is a story set in the late 1800s, that centers on a privileged young woman named Virginia Harlan, as she enters high society and deals with her inheritance and what other people think. Even though she grows up with advantages, Virginia's family and two aunts significantly influence her and how she sees the world. As Virginia turns eighteen, she learns she’s getting a lot of money, which makes her rethink relationships and who she is as a person. With advice from her father, she becomes aware of the issues that come with wealth and people only being nice to her because of her money. The beginning of the story sets the scene for Virginia's relationships and her fight for independence, showing the contrast between what she wishes for and what society actually expects.
