Summary

"The Daughter Pays" by Mrs. Baillie Reynolds is a story from the past about Virginia Mynors, a pretty young woman whose wealthy family loses all their money, and she has to take care of her mom and younger siblings. Even though life becomes tough, Virginia's looks draw rich men to her, putting her in difficult situations where she has to make hard choices about what's right and wrong. At the beginning, Virginia and her friend Miriam are enjoying a fancy, easy life looking at art. But things at home are bad because her family is poor after her dad died and they wasted all their money. Virginia has to grow up fast, taking responsibility for her family and dealing with her feelings for Gerald Rosenberg, whose dad is rich and wants Virginia to be more than just a friend. The story shows what it was like for women back then and explores themes of love, giving up things for others, and what people expected of women.
