Summary

"Tess of the d'Urbervilles: A Pure Woman" by Thomas Hardy is a story set in the Victorian era about a young woman named Tess Durbeyfield who comes from a poor family but discovers they have noble roots. The book looks at ideas about social status, how women were expected to act, and the sad results of finding out who you really are when society has strict rules. At the beginning, Tess's dad finds out he's related to a fancy family, which makes him act foolishly. Tess is a simple, pretty girl who sees her dad's silly behavior. When an accident kills their horse, which the family needs to live, Tess feels responsible and tries to take care of everyone while also figuring out who she is.

About the Author

Thomas Hardy was an English novelist and poet. A Victorian realist in the tradition of George Eliot, he was influenced both in his novels and in his poetry by Romanticism, including the poetry of William Wordsworth. He was highly critical of much in Victorian society, especially on the declining status of rural people in Britain such as those from his native South West England.
