Summary

"Girlhood and Womanhood" by Sarah Tytler is a story that looks closely at Joanna Crawfurd, a laird's daughter dealing with family responsibility, what society expects of her, and how the past affects the present. The story follows the Crawfurd family, especially Joanna, as they face tough relationships and the weight of their family's history, a complicated past that begins with her father's tragic duel. Joanna is shown as someone who deeply cares for her father's sadness and how society sees him. We also see Joanna and her sisters with their cousin, Polly Musgrave, who brings new ideas to the family. Their youthful fun and understanding are mixed with the family's past problems, hinting at themes of giving up things, being responsible, and finding yourself while dealing with societal pressures.
