Summary

"A Girl of the People" by L. T. Meade is a story set in Liverpool about Elizabeth "Bet" Granger, a determined newspaper girl, and her battles with the tough parts of her world after her mother passes away. The story looks at ideas like being responsible, staying strong, and trying to find who you are when things are hard. Right away, Bet's friends try to get her to join them, but she feels like rebelling because she loves her sick mother. After leaving her friends, she figures out that her mother is very sick and that she lost her favorite book, "Jane Eyre," which showed how much she wanted to get away from her life. When her mother dies, Bet is sad and knows she has to take care of her younger brothers, nicknamed the "Cap'n" and "Gen'ral." The beginning shows how Bet feels inside and how much she wants to keep her brothers safe from their dad's neglect, which helps shape how she grows as a person during the rest of the story.
