Summary

"Polly: A New-Fashioned Girl" by L. T. Meade is a story from the early 1900s about a lively girl named Polly Perkins, who is only fourteen years old. When Polly's mother passes away, she has to grow up fast and take care of her large family; she is thrust into this unexpected role when she has to manage the household for a week. The story begins on a peaceful day, but Polly is curious about the world and excited, as we learn while she catches birds but also that her life is about to change, especially considering her mother's nearing day of labor. The story takes a sad turn when Polly learns of her mother's passing and that turns her world upside down. She has to be the grownup in the situation, plus she is grief-stricken. It shows how strong she is and that she wants to be independent. Overall, the beginning of the novel sets the stage for the adventure and toughness that Polly will need on her journey as she adjusts to her new life.
