"The King's Daughters: How Two Girls Kept the Faith" by Emily Sarah Holt is a story that takes place in England when Queen Mary I ruled, a time when Protestants were in danger for what they believed. It's about two young girls who are strong in their faith even when things get tough. The story shows what life was like back then, the problems people faced because of their religion, and what happened if they didn't agree with the Queen. We meet Alice Mount and Margaret Thurston as they go to a shop, but their normal day is mixed with the stress of religious problems as Alice has suffered in the past for her beliefs, and they're reminded of the dangers around them. These girls have to be brave and careful as they live their lives and deal with the fear of being punished for their faith to survive.

Emily Sarah Holt (1836–1893) was an English novelist. She was born at Stubbylee, Bacup, in Lancashire, 25 April 1836. She was the eldest daughter of John Holt whose wife Judith was the 3rd daughter of James Mason of Greens. It is said she was educated at Oxford. In late 1893 when at Harrogate, she became ill and went to her brother in Balham (London), where she died on Christmas Day.
