Summary

"The Girls of St. Wode's" by L. T. Meade is a tale from the late 1800s that follows cousins Eileen, Marjorie, and Letitia as they leave school and enter society, dealing with themes of being modern women as well as what society wants from them. As the girls come home from school they hit a big turning point in their lives as they get read for their debut into society. Mrs. Chetwynd and Mrs. Acheson talk about different opinions on education and women's role in society. Twins Eileen and Marjorie would rather live on their own and want to go to St. Wode's College for more education. These desires contrast with their mother's dream for them launch into high society, leading to conflict.

About the Author

Elizabeth Thomasina Meade Smith (1844–1914), writing under the pseudonym L. T. Meade, was a prolific writer of girls' stories. She was born in Bandon, County Cork, Ireland, daughter of Rev. R. T. Meade, of Nohoval, County Cork. She later moved to London, where she married Alfred Toulmin Smith in September 1879.
