When aliens arrive demanding communication under the threat of destruction, a psychologist named Francine Millar is thrust into the high-stakes mission of deciphering the alien language while battling her own inner sorrow. As the team of linguists and psychologists wrestle with the aliens' complex language, which is a blend of verbal and non-verbal communication, Francine begins to uncover deeper truths about language, emotion, and the very essence of human connection.
