Lister's Great Adventure

"Lister's Great Adventure" by Harold Bindloss is a story set in the early 1900s that follows George Lister, a railway engineer, as he tackles tough jobs and tricky relationships as the world changes fast. The story kicks off by presenting people like Tom Cartwright, who always sticks his nose in other people's business, and Barbara, a young woman who doesn't like being told what to do, and shows how their lives get mixed up with Lister's. The book starts at a nice summer hotel in Canada, where Cartwright is worried his stepdaughter Barbara might like a clerk named Shillito too much. As Cartwright tries to interfere, we see that Barbara is headstrong and acts without thinking, showing the problems between what she wants and what others expect of her. At the same time, Lister dreams of moving up in the railway business and hints that he might be falling for a mysterious girl he met on a train. The beginning of the book hints at an exciting adventure where Lister has to figure out his place in a world full of chances and personal problems.
