Summary

"Ranching for Sylvia" by Harold Bindloss is a story from the early 1900s about George Lansing, a reserved man whose life changes when his friend dies and Sylvia Marston, the friend’s widow whom he secretly loves, comes back into his life. George becomes the executor of the dead husband’s will, which pulls him back to the tough Canadian prairie. There, he has to deal with the challenges of managing a ranch and his complicated feelings for Sylvia. The story starts with George waiting for Sylvia, showing his long-held, mixed emotions for her. Sylvia, dressed in mourning clothes, brings back sad memories of her difficult times on the prairie after her husband passed away. Their conversations mix memories with plans for her farm, showing George’s strong commitment to her and his inner struggles. George takes on the responsibility of running her farm to protect her from going broke, which shows the main idea of the book: dealing with duty, giving up things for others, and the problems of love, all set against the rough background of country life.
