Summary

"The Long Portage" by Harold Bindloss is a story placed in the untamed lands of British Columbia, telling of Vernon Lisle's difficult journey alongside friends through cruel wilderness while searching for the real story behind a failed trip. The book touches on elements of getting by, never giving up, and the hard choices people make. It starts with Vernon Lisle trying to survive while fishing in a freezing stream. With two others, including an English man named Nasmyth, they are tied to the story of George and Clarence Gladwyne's disastrous trip. As they talk about the sad details of what happened to the Gladwynes, it's clear Lisle wants to find out the truth because of his friend, who died supposedly trying to rescue his cousin. This start creates a tough adventure where Lisle tries to discover what really happened to the Gladwynes, fighting both the weather and the dark parts of his past.
