Summary

"Ewing's Lady" by Harry Leon Wilson is a story from the early 1900's that follows Mrs. Laithe, a ranch woman drawn to a young artist called Ewing's kid, who is the son a deceased painter. The book looks at reaching for goals, showing off art skills, how people get along, and the hard parts of living in the countryside. The story kicks off with Mrs. Laithe meeting Ewing's son while riding a horse, and their funny and clumsy conversations show how their connection grows. Ewing's kid seems quiet and hard to catch, making him seem interesting and mysterious. Mrs. Laithe thinks about the guys around her and how they act, pointing out the contrast between doing what people expect and following your own heart, which sets the scene for seeing what happens between her and Ewing's kid, hinting that they'll both change as they get to know each other, especially since Ewing's kid seems to try to avoid her.
