Summary

"The Ranch Girls and Their Heart's Desire" by Margaret Vandercook is a story about Lady Kent, formerly known as Jacqueline Ralston, who finds herself back at her childhood ranch in Wyoming after her husband passes away. As she begins to settle back into life on the Rainbow ranch, she faces the push and pull between her longing for independence and raising her son, Jimmie, away from the expectations of high society. Right away we meet Jack and Jim Colter riding together while they are taking in the sweeping views of the ranch, mirroring Jack’s inner conflict. She's torn between returning to the life she treasures and handling her duties as a mother within societal boundaries. As relationships develop, like we see with Jim who hopes Jack will stay and help on the ranch, the book hints at future problems. The chapter hints at future conflicts as they rush to face a stampede that could harm Jimmie. Jack is facing the challenges of balancing where she came from and who she is now.
