Summary

"Son Philip" by George Manville Fenn is a story that takes place in the late 1800s and centers on Philip Hexton, a mine owner's son, who uses his smartness and hard work to help modernize his operations. Philip aims to make coal mining safer, but comes up against miners who don't like his new authority and want to keep doing things the dangerous old way, like ignoring safety rules. Despite the miners anger, he feels strongly that it is his duty to protect the mine workers from danger. He stands up to characters like Ebenezer Parks. The story reaches its most exciting point when Parks tries to damage the mine, causing it to flood badly. However, Philip's hard work pays off when the mine is made safer, showing how committed he is to saving lives. The story follows Philip's development from someone who wants to make his parents happy to a well-respected leader in the mine industry.
