Summary

"Devereux — Volume 05" by Edward Bulwer Lytton is a historical novel set in the 1800s that traces Mortimer Devereux's transformation as he journeys through Europe and Russia. The story begins with Devereux contemplating the emotional impact of travel and the social imbalances he observes in France, leading to philosophical discussions with a village priest about happiness and societal limitations. His travels take him to Russia, where his interactions with the Russian royalty expose him to political plots and force him to reconsider his understanding of freedom and authority. Through these interactions, Devereux wrestles with fundamental questions about life and death, as well as the true meaning of existence.
