Summary

"The Bride of the Nile — Volume 12" by Georg Ebers is a historical novel from the 1800s that follows a woman named Paula as she is caught up in dangerous events because of the tough times she lives in; the story explores themes of love, sacrifice, and religious belief during a time of disagreement and trouble. The story gets intense as a trial unfolds, accusations are thrown around, and sacrifices are planned, forcing the characters to face hard choices and think about what’s right and wrong. At the start of the novel, Paula’s fiancé, Orion, has to defend himself in court against theft accusations and deal with anger from religious leaders and others. While this is happening, Paula struggles with problems of her own, including her father’s failing health and a life-threatening sacrifice she must face. As Orion fights to clear his name, the community's social disruption mirrors their personal struggles, setting the scene for a story about how far people will go and what they will give up as they try to control their linked lives in the face of approaching disaster.
