Summary

"The Smuggler's Cave" by George A. Birmingham is an early 20th-century novel about a quaint village's historical pageant that turns scandalous, impacting everything from local society to national politics. When Sir Evelyn Dent, a history-loving retired Cabinet Minister, arrives in Hailey Compton to explore an old sea cave, he becomes entangled in the villagers' plans for a smuggling-themed pageant; the story follows the unexpected twists and turns that erupt from this small village's attempt to celebrate its past, highlighting character interactions and societal observations through humor and intrigue, especially when juxtaposed against characters like the enthusiastic Mrs. Agatha Eames.
