Summary

"Hyacinth" by George A. Birmingham is a story that follows the life of Æneas Conneally, a once passionate clergyman who changes significantly after experiencing deep personal loss, leaving him grappling with his faith and relationships in his Irish community. The novel, set in 19th-century Ireland, looks at themes of belief, selfhood, and the difficulties of society, opening with an exploration of the history of missionary work in Ireland and Æneas' role in trying to convert Catholics to Protestantism. The death of his mother and other letdowns lead Æneas to a different path as he marries, has a son called Hyacinth, and finds new meaning in life. The book suggests future challenges for Hyacinth in school and transformation in their town, along with his father’s ongoing personal problems, blending individual sadness with the broader scenery of society and politics.
