Summary

"General John Regan" by George A. Birmingham is a story that unfolds in the sleepy Irish town of Ballymoy, where an American arrives with plans to write about the famous General John Regan and erect a statue in his honor, throwing the town into comedic chaos and political maneuvering. Constable Moriarty and Sergeant Colgan find their quiet lives turned upside down as they navigate Mr. Billing's arrival and the town's attempt to honor a general whose true identity is shrouded in mystery. As the local newspaper editor, Gallagher, gets tangled in a web of half-truths and local legends, the narrative playfully explores themes of community pride, historical ambiguity, and the uproarious nature of small-town politics, all set against the backdrop of early 20th-century Ireland.

About the Author

George A. Birmingham was the pen name of James Owen Hannay, Irish clergyman and prolific novelist. He was active in the Gaelic League, but strained his relations with Irish nationalists by supporting Robert Lindsay Crawford in his opposition to clerical control of education.
