Summary

"The Green Flag, and Other Stories of War and Sport" by Arthur Conan Doyle is a compilation of short stories set in the 1800s that mainly explore conflict through soldiers' experiences in war and the concept of personal honor. The initial story follows Dennis Conolly, a British Army recruit, who deals with his challenging devotion to his Irish roots. As he journeys the reality of war between the British troops and the Arab forces, the uneasy political and social environment of Ireland sets the stage for Dennis Conolly, who joins the British Army after his brother dies in a minor battle. Within Conolly’s company—of the Royal Mallows—the book highlights the stress, friendship, and the hidden disputes and battles that emerge during a military campaign. It explores Conolly's dedication torn between his Irish background and the expectations placed on him by the British soliders that he is working with.
