Summary

"Gossamer" by George A. Birmingham is a tale of two opposing Irishmen, Sir James Digby and Michael Gorman, whose fateful meeting on a transatlantic voyage tests their beliefs and identities. The story unfolds through the eyes of Sir James, a gentleman detached from his heritage, and Gorman, a zealous Irish patriot. The book brings up questions of loyalty, national identity, and the tangled web of human relationships, set against the backdrop of a long journey to America. Their paths cross with Carl Ascher, an emotional Irish banker. As the ship sails, Gorman sees an opportunity to win over Ascher with a business plan, creating both excitement and moral conflict about pursuing wealth.
