Summary

"Mother of Pearl" by Anatole France unravels the story of Lælius Lamia, a Roman in exile, who is reunited with his former friend, Pontius Pilate, on the coast of Baiæ. The book explores their shared past and the weighty memories of Pilate's time governing Judæa, including the conflicts between the Roman rulers and the Jewish people. Their discussions reveal the tough realities of maintaining control, questioning the cost of power, and the complexities of their engagement with the people of Jerusalem, all spun into a reflection on history and the implications it leaves on the individuals involved.
