Summary

"Susanna and Sue" by Kate Douglas Smith Wiggin is a heartwarming story about Susanna Hathaway and her daughter, Sue, who seek safety and a fresh start in a Shaker community to escape a troubled marriage. Rooted in the early 1900s, the book examines the responsibilities of being a mom, what society expects from women, and the journey to find calmness among struggles and desires. The book starts by painting a picture of the calm Shaker Settlement with its neat buildings, which is the opposite of Susanna's chaotic history. As they get closer to their new home, Susanna is both excited and scared about her choice, and Sue shows the innocence and inquisitiveness of a child. With the welcoming presence of Eldress Abby, the story begins to explore Susanna's life and her search for inner peace in the Shaker way of life, making us think about the choices that shape our lives.
