Summary

"What Men Live By, and Other Tales" by Leo Tolstoy is a set of stories from the 1800s about understanding compassion, how people connect, and what it means to be alive. One story introduces Simon, a shoemaker who doesn't have much money. After finding a naked man, Simon learns about doing good and caring for others. Simon is having a hard time because he doesn't have much money and is trying to take care of his family. One day, Simon finds a man with no clothes on near a holy place. At first, he is scared and thinks only of himself, but Simon decides he must help the man. He gives the naked man his coat, showing he is becoming a kind person. This one act gets us thinking about being human, love, and how all people are connected and prepares us for the important lessons Tolstoy wants to teach.
