Summary

"A Gentleman Vagabond and Some Others" by Francis Hopkinson Smith is a compilation of tales set in the late 1800s that focuses on different individuals that stand for different levels of being a wanderer who is also a gentleman. The collection takes you through social interactions, kindness, and what makes us human through meetings in both fancy places and the real world.. The first tale presents Major Tom Slocomb, a happy but clumsy man looking for someone he knows in New York City. The reader quickly gets pulled into the major's life given his funny conversations and colorful way of speaking about his rich past, which shows a life of kindness and generosity despite not having much money. As the Major interacts with numerous individuals, like the careful African American servant and wealthy people he knows, we begin to be shown the story through humor, memories, and thoughts on society.
