Summary

"Short Stories" by Fyodor Dostoyevsky is a gathering of stories from the late 1800s that consider the human mind, moral problems, and social troubles through different main characters. It includes "An Honest Thief," which shows a single man, his housekeeper, and a new renter, dealing with understanding, feeling alone, and what stealing means. The collection starts with the man talking to his quiet housekeeper, Agrafena, who wants to take in Astafy Ivanovitch, an old soldier as a renter, which makes him happy at first because he’s lonely. But when the man's coat goes missing, it makes things hard between them, especially Astafy, who can't stop thinking about it, showing his own weaknesses and moral fights. This gets the readers ready for Dostoyevsky's look into people’s relationships and the confusing parts of being human.
