Summary

"The Confession: A Novel" by Maksim Gorky is a story about Matvei, an orphan left alone as a baby, who faces a tough life looking for who he is. The book looks into big ideas like being poor, unfairness in society, and trying to find worth as a human, showing how hard it is for the main character to deal with his life and what people expect of him. At first, Matvei is raised by a nice gardener and then by a kind church worker, Larion, who teaches him about kindness. This is different from the mean way society treats him because he was abandoned. As Matvei gets older, he tries to figure out who he is and what he will do with his life, even when others make fun of him and he feels lost because of where he comes from. It's a touching look at a young man's troubles as he grows up in a difficult world.
