Summary

"Marm Lisa" by Kate Douglas Smith Wiggin is a story set in a tough city neighborhood, where we meet a young girl, Marm Lisa, battling the challenges of growing up. It probably touches on themes of being responsible, being kind, and trying to improve yourself, even when things are hard. The tale begins in a place called Eden Place, a rough area filled with kids and adults who don't have much. Mrs. Grubb, a woman with different ideas, is taking care of Marm Lisa and two twins, Atlantic and Pacific. Marm Lisa seems sad and uncared for, but she looks after the twins. Later on, Mistress Mary enters Marm Lisa’s life, wanting to help her learn and grow, which sets the stage for a big change in Marm Lisa’s life.

Kate Wiggin devoted her adult life to the welfare of children in an era when children were commonly thought of as cheap labor.
