"Denry the Audacious" by Arnold Bennett is a story set in the early 1900s that follows Edward Henry Machin, called Denry, a regular young man from the factory town of Bursley. Denry is bold and good at taking chances; he goes from working as a clerk to chasing a bigger life when he meets a Countess and gets big ideas from their dance. At first, we learn about Denry's life and see him as a likable and a little bit naughty. Even though he starts out with very little, he wishes to be great. We also meet his mom, a widow, who works hard as a seamstress to provide for them. When Denry finds a way to cheat on a school test to win a prize, it shows how bold he is and helps him get better opportunities. The story then moves to a big event, a town ball hosted by the Countess. This event excites Denry and makes him want more, so he finds a way to get invited to this fancy party. As Denry gets caught up in social games and maybe even love, his desires and the trickiness of his character start to show, hinting at more exciting adventures in this detailed story of ambition and wanting to climb the social ladder.
