Summary

"A Great Success" by Mrs. Humphry Ward is a story set in London during the late 19th or early 20th century, that looks at relationships and goals of people who are on different places in the social ladder. The book follows Arthur Meadows, a lecturer who is becoming well known, and his wife, Doris Meadows, who is trying to find her place as society changes around them and her husband's success grows. The story talks about what it meant to be a man versus a woman at the time, the desire for success, and the difficulties that arise when personal development clashes with a relationship. The book starts by showing the Meadows' daily lives, as Arthur's growing fame in the world of literature adds excitement to their days. As they deal with many letters about Arthur's lectures, their different points of view become clear: Arthur wants success and recognition, while Doris worries about their money and social status. The beginning scenes show Doris's worries about the demands of high society, especially when it comes to Lady Dunstable, a powerful figure who threatens Doris's role as Arthur's partner. The early interactions show a mix of closeness and tension as Doris struggles to meet social expectations and Arthur enjoys the attention and opportunities that come with his new fame.
