Summary

"Sir George Tressady — Volume II" by Mrs. Humphry Ward is a compelling story set in the late 1800s, following a Parliament member, George Tressady, as he wrestles with difficult family relationships and the challenging world of politics. The story shows George's struggles with his mother, Lady Tressady, and his wife, Letty, revealing the heavy weight of societal expectations during a time of big political and social changes. The beginning opens with George visiting his mother, whose health seems to be getting worse, she avoids talking about anything important. The interactions between George and Letty reveal cracks in their marriage, and Lady Tressady's need for attention adds to the tension. Through their conversations, Lady Tressady's dramatic nature is revealed, while George deals with both his mother's health and his wife's carefree attitude, all set against the backdrop of political drama surrounding the Maxwell Bill. The novel blends personal struggles with political issues, setting the scene for a story filled with both intimate and public turmoil.
