Summary

"The Card, a Story of Adventure in the Five Towns" by Arnold Bennett is a captivating story following Edward Henry Machin, or Denry, as he journeys through the early 1900s society of the Five Towns. The book dives into ideas of wanting more and moving up in the world, seen through Denry's life and especially at a fancy ball, which changes everything for him. At first, Denry is shown as a smart, but maybe not so honest, young man who gets a scholarship under questionable circumstances and works as a clerk. His connection with his hard-working mother shows the setting of his goals. The first part of the book ends with Denry deciding he must go to a ball hosted by the Countess of Chell, showing how much he wants to climb the social ladder and as he meets different people, it sets the scene for his adventures and problems as he attempts to improve his life while dealing with what society expects.
