Summary

"The Regent" by Arnold Bennett is a story set in the early 1900s about Edward Henry Machin, a middle-aged guy who's a little down despite doing okay in life, since he is tired of all the home stuff and being rich, and wants something more exciting and meaningful. We meet Edward Henry as he thinks about how his money success is not all that great since he feels pretty bored. He made some money on the stock market. When he gets home, he is annoyed by the mess and feels like he and his wife, Nellie, are not really connecting. His family makes him feel tense, like when their kid gets a little hurt by the dog. Edward just wants some attention and fun, but it seems to clash with how things really are every day. Because of this feeling, he goes out to the theatre and hopes to change things up and have a deeper experience in life.
