"Penguin Island" by Anatole France is a comical story from the 1800s that follows Saint Maël, a committed apostle, on a bizarre mission. He sets out to convert the penguins of a made-up island to Christianity, mixing religion, right and wrong, and the silliness of humans, all shown through penguins that act like people. We first meet Saint Maël as he tries to teach the penguins about his religion. He gave up being a prince to become a monk and then the leader of a monastery. Along his journey, his beliefs are tested by difficult situations, like meeting people who worship different gods and resisting temptations from the devil. A key event happens when Maël mistakenly baptizes penguins, thinking they are humans. This leads to a funny series of events that question religious rules and what it truly means to be human.
