Summary

"Anna of the Five Towns" by Arnold Bennett is a story set in the industrial landscape of England, where Anna Tellwright finds herself caught between her duty to her family and her own desires. The story opens with Anna's younger sister, Agnes, joyous after a prize-giving ceremony, contrasting with Anna's more thoughtful nature as she approaches her twenty-first birthday. Anna's life is complicated by her relationship with her wealthy, yet stingy, father, Ephraim Tellwright. As Anna begins to know Henry Mynors, a respected man in town, she starts to grapple with newfound feelings of love and the constraints placed upon her, which starts her journey of self-discovery amidst familial expectations and societal pressures.
